The Fantasticks is the longest running musical on Broadway, finally closing in January 2002 after more than 40 years of performances.

It is a simple, sophisticated story of young love and the parents who plot to get them together by keeping them apart.  Relying on reverse psychology, the parents pretend to being feuding, build a wall between their homes, and forbid the children to speak to each other.  Naturally, the children are attracted and fall in love.  When the plan succeeds, the parents ask for the help of a mysterious El Gallo to end their feud.  El Gallo kidnaps the daughter, the son rescues her, and so it seems everyone will live happily ever after.  But, the children break up and venture out on their own to see the world, only to witness its harsh realities.  In the process, their romantic notions mature into a more realistic understanding of love.

The memorable score includes “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” “They Were You,” “Never Say No”, “Much More,” and the timeless “Try to Remember.”
