Sally Bowles
Cabaret is a
stunning musical. This marionette's-eye view of a time and place in our
lives that was brassy, wanton, carefree, and destined to crumble is brilliantly
conceived.
The place is Berlin; the time, the late
20's, when Americans still traveled there and Hitler could be shrugged off as a
passing noise that needn't disturb dedicated dancers. The storyline of Cabaret
wraps its arms around and is willing to embrace everything from Jew-baiting to
abortion. It treats all that was troubling and all that was intolerable
with a demonic grin, an insidious wink, and painted-on charm.
Hear the title song "Cabaret" out of
the context of the show, and it seems a very positive song about living as fully
as possible. Hear it in the show, and it's something else again. In the
show it expresses the irony, the self-delusion, the sadness of lost love, that
make up the theme of the last few scenes. Which would we choose: the
reality of a love or the deluding, self-destructive glitter of night life in
Berlin?
Enjoy, listen, observe, and decide........
