A musical that pokes fun at musicals. A musical
burlesque. High melodrama. A parody of the style of operetta
made famous by Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. And, pretty funny,
too.
Little Mary Sunshine premiered in New York
in 1959 and was the longest running off-Broadway production in its day.
Written by Rick Besoyan, the original cast included John Aniston and Eileen
Brennan.
The action takes place at the Colorado Inn, high
in the Rocky Mountains, in the early 20th century. According to one
reviewer, this is "the
sort of tale in which villains twist the ends of their pointy moustaches and
rugged but upright heroes -- think Dudley Do-right -- come to the rescue of
damsels in distress."
Mary,
of course, is the damsel. Her hero is Big Jim, a forest ranger in the
Colorado Rocky Mountains (who looks pretty good in uniform). Add in
some satire, some politically incorrect characters (this was written 50
years ago and it's spoofing the style of the 1920s), some great music, comedy,
sophisticated satire, and double entrendes, and you've got the mix for an
entertaining show.
Among the characters are Indians speaking in the
style of early Westerns, a German opera singer who sings everything out of
context, and a "Coo Coo bird." Oh, yes, don't forget the
forest rangers!
